There is a very popular saying that “white hair is a sign of wisdom“. Now as interesting as that sounds.. not so many of us would be in a hurry to acquire that “special” kind of wisdom..(LOL that comes with age..

We would rather be unwise and youthful … than old and wise…(L0L)

This is simply because, most of us have come to associate aging with a lot of negative physical imagery that includes lots of things like grey hair, sagging skin, jowls, wrinkles, age spots etc.,, and rightly so too.

The Good News is.. It doesn’t have to be that way, or that bad. We can do something about this without being completely helpless.

And besides, while we worry about aging chronologically, some people are even aging faster than their chronological ages as a result of certain decisions or choices that they are presently making. These decisions and choices would more than likely lead to a nightmare old age.

Let’s take a look at some of them

  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Unprotected sun exposure
  • Eating of unhealthy and highly processed food
  • Using a lot of harsh chemical to erode the skin layers excessively
  • Increase in inflammation

The common denominating factor among all these is that fact that majority of these processes lead to a break down of the skin structure and integrity and the major culprits are called “free radicals”.  Antioxidants help to neutralise the damaging effects of free radicals.

It has been proven that Antioxidants have something to do with longevity, as a current scientific study revealed that “high traces of antioxidants were found in the blood stream of people who lived up to a 100 years old”.

Ingesting and topically applying antioxidants on skin is one of the proven mechanisms for the skin to protect itself from external damaging influences as well as pollution.

There is no gainsaying the fact that the more anything is protected.. the longer and fresher it remains.

A fresh orange left exposed spoils quicker than one protected from the environment either by wrapping in a foil, putting in a zip lock bag or putting in the fridge.

And the more layers of protection it has, the longer and fresher it will be.

Going back to our orange example above, an orange wrapped in a foil will not last as long as one that is wrapped in a foil and then put in a fridge.

So it is with our skin, the more we protect it, the fresher and longer it will last.

Oxidation affects skin at every age, however, much younger skin has the ability to protect itself better. Unfortunately as we get older, the skin’s  natural ability to fight against these skin disruptors called “free radicals” significantly decrease, so we need to help the skin to boost its ability to protect itself from oxidation, hence Antioxidants are important skincare ingredient for all ages and skin types, but most especially as we get older.

So in summary, here are a few helpful tips to help you age beautifully and with grace:

  1. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables
  2. Reduce intake of fried, sugary , salty, highly processed foods. Instead stay with wholesome, well cooked food. Steaming, boiling, slow cooking and even baking our food is a better choice than deep frying in oil for healthy skin and body.
  3. Increase intake of green tea, nuts and other food groups that have high antioxidant content.
  4. Avoid too much exposure to the sun, and if you must, then wear a sunscreen.
  5. Drink water.
  6. Avoid using harsh or bleaching creams on skin
  7. Avoid over exfoliating and peeling the skin.
  8. Make sure that you have skincare products that are rich in antioxidants for optimum skin health.
