Face smoothing cream-p2

What is a lotion base?

A lotion base is a basic moisturizer without any defined functionality (mostly due to  the absence of any recognizable active ingredient) which can be used as is or can be slightly modified, and has the ability to be further reformulated to incorporate more active ingredients to take it from just a basic moisturizer to a high performance skincare product.

Most natural skincare shops sell lotion bases as part of their very attractive product offers. There are several reasons for this:

  1. Most people would rather not slather on unsafe chemical laden cosmetics on their body, however they might not have the time to make wholesome and nourishing products they desire.
  2. They also realize that a lotion base is a canvass that a formulator can use to create whatever product he/she wants to effectively without going through all the steps. It acts like a “short cut” of some sort!

One big advantage of lotion bases is that they are relatively easy to preserve as they do not contain any plant or botanical extracts or a lot of active ingredients which can serve as nutrients to encourage microbial growth. Therefore, you can afford to make relatively large batches and then use this as a stock feed to make smaller batches of products with your actives incorporated.

Some examples of the variety of products you can make with a single batch of base lotion and some of the actives that can be used:

SkinWhitening: Addition of skin whitening actives to a base face lotion translates it to become a whitening cream. Some of the actives to achieve this include Kojic acid, Licorice extract, Vitamin C, Bearberry extract,Vitamin B3,alpha-arbutin etc.

Skin brightening: Addition of AHAs, Lactic acid, glycolic acid, papaya extract, retionol etc, to a lotion base makes it a skin brightening lotion.

Anti aging lotion: Addition of certain essential oils , Retinol, Betaglucan, ceramide complex, coQ10, Collagen protein hyaluronic acid, Vitamin B5 etc. can transform a base lotion to an antiaging lotion

Anti-oxidant lotion: actives such as green tea extract, CoQ10, mulberry root extract, Resveratrol, Vitamin C, Vitamin E etc can produce an antioxidant lotion.

That’s how important and diverse a lotion base can be.
