Dry skin

Dry skin is caused by a lack of oil in the skin. The skin has an oil producing gland called the “sebaceous gland” that helps to moisturise the skin through the hair in the hair follicle.  The oil produced in the sebaceous glands as well as the the epidermal lipids that form a bond that holds the cells in the epidermis know as the keratinocytes together, contribute to moisturise the skin surface, softening and moisturising it. In dry skin conditions, the sebaceous gland produces insufficient oil coupled with insufficient amount of epidermal lipids which  can lead to dry skin conditions.  Dry skin conditions as a result of insufficient production of oil from the oil glad are mostly genetic. There is not really much that one can do for genetically predisposed dry skin conditions ( other than manage it), but occupationally induced dry skin conditions can be reversed.

Dehydrated skin

Dehydrated skin can occur as a result of extended skin dryness, whereby you have a break in the skin barrier structure as a result of the lack of epidermal lipids which are supposed to hold together the integrity of the skin surface. This can cause a steady and continuous loss of water from the skin surface . In this situation, where the skin is loosing more water than its retaining, the skin can become dehydrated.

In dehydrated skin, the skin looses the ability to retain enough water within its layers to maintain its stability and perform its basic functions.

Skin dehydration is not a permanent or genetic condition , like dry skin can be. However, it is more of an occupational Condition of the skin that occurs when certain factors predispose the skin to loose more water than it can retain.

Most times, dehydrated skin is caused by not taking proper care of dry skin. While dry skin is mostly genetic and might not be treated, it can be managed. Proper management of dry skin conditions can help to prevent skin dehydration.

Causes of dehydrated skin

  • Prolonged skin dryness, caused by same factors as given for dry skin above
  • Improper management of dry skin conditions
  • Insufficient use of moisturising agents and products
  • Harsh or improperly formulated skincare products

Solution for Dehydrated skin

Unlike dry skin, dehydration is treatable with lifestyle changes. Replenishing your hydration is the first major step, so it’s important to drink plenty of water. You can start with the old rule of eight glasses of water per day if you don’t drink enough water already.

However, drinking water alone, will not solve the issue of skin dehydration, because the skin is the last to get hydration pending when the inner organs have had their fill.

You can treat dehydrated skin more effectively by:

  • Using skincare products that contain lots of humectants, that can help draw water into the skin surface, keeping it hyrated
  • Using emollient and occlusive products that can help form a film or barrier on the skin surface to prevent excessive loss of water from the skin to the environment.
  • Avoid contact of the skin with harsh chemicals and cleansers which can strip the skin of its natural oils and hence induce skin dryness
  • Over use of exfoliating products which can squamation of the top skin layers and weakness the skin barrier structure

How to test if your skin is dehydrated

You can do a simple pinch test at home to determine your skin’s hydration levels.

Take a small portion of your skin around the cheek area and squeeze lightly. If you notice any wrinkling and if the skin doesn’t bounce back after you let go, then your skin may be dehydrated.

Your dermatologist or aesthetician can also help you figure out if your skin is dehydrated or dry.
